A Video From “The Rock”

Posted by Russ 29 Jul, 2009

Check out the footage from one day of our Oregon Coast trip. I sailed overpowered 4.2, and Jake was on 3.7. Pistol River definitely delivered the goods on this day.

The Oregon Trip Continues

Posted by Russ 23 Jul, 2009
The wind has been somewhat fickle recently, so my good sailing buddy Jake Miller, and I, decided to go to the coast to see what we could find. The first day, we drove to Manzanita with hopes of finding an escape from the 100 degree temps in the gorge, and some good wavesailing. We did find cool weather, but not enough wind. With a poor forecast for winds in the Gorge and on the Coast, we were unsure what to do. We figured the best chance was going to be the Southern Oregon Coast.

We arrived at Pistol River wednesday afternoon, and we got lucky. There were head high waves and strong winds filled in through the break. It was slightly onshore conditions, so the wave riding was mostly backside stuff, but there were some good meaty down the line snaps to be had as well. As Pistol is famous for, the jumping was reallly good. Jake and I took turns throwing big back loops and Push loops. All in all, it was a really good day, and somewhat unexpected. The forecast is pretty good, so we should see some excellent conditions in the coming days. Here is a pushloop sequence that Jake caught on the camera. I will post again with more updates.

Oregon Trip

Posted by Russ 17 Jul, 2009

I left Maui to visit Oregon for the month of July, and it has proven to be a good trip so far. Shortly after arriving I got the call that the Coast had a big swell and lots of wind to go along with it. Myself, and a few others packed into a truck, and headed to Florence, Oregon. We arrived to 35mph wind and overhead swell. We were sailing right next to a jetty, so the waves were not all chopped up from the wind. There were some good waverides to be had, but the jumping was really amazing. I was using a 3.5 and had full power all of the time.

More recently I have been hitting the gorge spots. We had a great 4-day run where I sailed on a 4.2 once and 3.5 every other day. Chris Boston took a few pictures while JP and I sailed at the Wall last Sunday. Also, Dave Troup took some video for his blog on Monday at Arlington. You can check his site out at epicsesh.blogspot.com for some insane footage.  You may have to type the address in.

The trip is only half over, so there should be plenty more sailing and blogging to do before it is up. See ya on the water.
