News From La Ventana
La Ventana, Baja Mexico, October 22
The first serious El Norte winds have arrived in southern Baja; bringing clear skies, warms temps, and winds of 20 to 30. Actually early season winds have been good this fall with 50% sailable days so far in October. Consistent winds usually begin along the East Cape of Baja in November, but the early winds have given us a chance to get out on the new 2008 Special Edition…the latest evolution in Ezzy’s popular wave sail. The sail maintains a balance of low end power that comes from the draft in the lower half of the sail, plus the top of the sail smoothly spills the gusts, which I believe gives you an even more balanced and controlled feeling while sailing. I can sail more relaxed in gusty conditions, and since we also sail the Gorge, being more relaxed in the gusts greatly increases the fun factor.
Rigging the sails is also easier for ‘08, with better instructions printed on the sail and video instructions from Dave on the website. In practice, I noticed that setting the downhaul takes less effort, and there are 3 cords at the clew to set the boom length for light, medium, and heavy wind. I found that setting the downhaul towards maximum and then tuning the needed power with the outhaul setting works best for me. It’s easy to set the outhaul as conditions change, on the beach or the water. This past week we have been out in 4.5 and 5.0 conditions, and were impressed with the smooth power and range of theses new sails. We’ll be sending more reports from Baja as the season goes on, plus a rigging clinic on the beach during the Christmas week in La Ventana. Looks like a 4.0 day, so its off to the beach for more testing…somebody has to do it. Good sailing, Gary & Nancy
(Gary & Nancy ran the rental demo center at Isthmus Sailboards in Hood River this year after several seasons at Windance. For the past seven winters they have been spreading the word about Ezzy on the beach in La Ventana)
Hanging with David on the beach!
A couple of weeks back, Windsurfing Magazines own Eddy Patricelli met up with David Ezzy at the beach and got the 101 on the Ezzy design concept.
Eddy shot video during the process then got to hit the water with a brand new SE rigged by the designer himself!
