Notes on Tuning the ‘07 SE from Jem Hall

Posted by Tim 26 Jan, 2007

We want you to get the most out of your Ezzy Sails. We encourage you to contact us about fine tuning any year Ezzy. Here is an example of how a few tweaks can improve sail performance:

“Hi Jem!
Please take us through your sailing experience with the 2007 sails.

  1. We’re curious what booms/masts/bases you used – For all my ezzys I use ezzy masts and the recommended ones utilising the mix n match concept, like a 400 bottom and a 430 top for the 5.2, at the bast I use rdm pro limit extensions. Boomwise I have been using the neil pryde carbon, with a stiff boom and narrow diameter it completes the awesome feel of the rig.
  2. Explain how you first rigged your ’07 Wave SE’s? – from previously using the 06 s I rigged with a lot of downhaul and medium outhaul, say 2cm positive.
  3. How did they sail? – they had an excellent top end but felt a tad stiff as though they had not a great deal of spring, or what you might call feel in the sail.
  4. How did you change your rigging? – after sending Dave some press pics he noticed that my harness lines were a long way back, often the result of overdownhauling, and therefore suggested I let off the downhaul. I also watched the very helpful rigging videos on the ezzy site. So I let off some downhaul and the outhaul was then right around the recommended length.
  5. How have they sailed since? – they have much improved spring, what you might call feel, and the bottom end was also a lot better. You can really utilise the VTS (visual trim system) as a guide and with the sail loose to just inside the vts shape there is now a lot less loose leech. If I wanted more control in strong winds then I would add positive outhaul, with all the pre shaping and spring in the sail you can really go for this and the sail will work in some seriously strong winds!

RIG YOUR SAILS RIGHT AND YOU LL REAP HUGE REWARDS. ENJOY,
Jem Hall

60 knots on a 4.0 Ezzy SE

Posted by Tim 23 Jan, 2007

Hey Ezzy fans,
I thought you’d like to get a look at an email we just received from the UK.

Hi Dave

Hope your well thought i would drop you line to let you know about a recent session i had on your new ltd edition sails.

I used my 4.0 mse in 60 knots of wind (69 mph) although mentally overpowered the sail held its shape.

The centre of effort was low and forward and i was suprised how i was able to controll the power.I certianly could have used a smaller sail ,if i had one but the sail did the business in extreme conditions. The wind speed while i was out was between 52 and 60 mph.

Regards

Simon

Less Cam Pop on the Infinity

Posted by Tim 2 Jan, 2007
Hi Ezzy Guys,
I have question.
I own 7.5 (2006) and 6.6 (2005) Infinity sails. They rig fine and I believe I have the right cam/cam shim combos. They work fine but -
I am looking for a bit more of a looser sail when the sail is rotated – I was told that using the next bigger cam shim size would put less tension on the cam and lessen the pop.
Is this true ?? if a workable idea, any drawbacks ???
Thanks

You are correct, you can soften the rotation by using a LONGER cam pocket. I suggest going up two pocket sizes (pocket “A” is the shortest and “I” is the longest).
There is no real drawback, just the sleeve is a bit looser.
Please let me know if you need any more assistance.
Thanks,
David Ezzy
